Reviewed by Harry Carpenter, founder of Carpenters Tree Care Ltd · Last updated 26 August 2026 ## The Short Answer For most deciduous trees in the UK the best time to prune is late autumn to late winter, when the tree is dormant, the structure is visible and there are no nesting birds. The exceptions matter: cherries and plums must be pruned in summer to avoid silver leaf, birch and maple bleed heavily if cut in early spring, and evergreens are generally best worked in late spring once the risk of hard frost has passed. ## Why dormant-season pruning suits most trees Between roughly November and March a deciduous tree has shut down for the year. Sap is not moving under pressure, the leaves are off so the branch architecture and any defects are plainly visible, and the fungal spores responsible for most decay infections are far less active than in warm, humid weather. Cutting in that window also means the tree channels the following spring’s energy surge into sealing the wound. Trees do not heal in the way animals do — they compartmentalise, walling off the damaged tissue behind chemical and physical boundaries — and a cut made just before the growth flush gets the fastest and most complete response. There are practical advantages too. Frozen or dry winter ground takes machinery and foot traffic far better than saturated autumn lawns, and the nesting-bird restriction that runs from March to August does not apply. ## The month-by-month calendar Use this as a planning guide. The right window for any individual tree also depends on its condition, its position and what the work is trying to achieve, and safety work overrides the calendar entirely. - **November–February:** the main window. Crown reductions, thinning, crown lifting, formative pruning and felling on oak, ash, beech, sycamore, lime, horse chestnut, hornbeam and most other broadleaves. Also the best period for heavy hedge reduction. - **March:** last chance before bud burst for most species, but stop pruning birch, maple, walnut and hornbeam — they bleed sap heavily now. Nesting season begins; every tree and hedge needs checking before work. - **April–May:** evergreens and conifers, once hard frosts have passed. Light formative work on young trees. Avoid anything substantial on established broadleaves. - **June–August:** the correct window for cherries, plums and other _Prunus_, and for apples and pears being trained or restricted. Light summer trimming on hedges after nesting has finished. Avoid heavy reduction in drought conditions. - **September–October:** a poor month for major cuts — decay fungi are releasing spores and the tree is winding down rather than able to respond. Good for hedge cutting, tree planting and surveys ahead of winter work. ## Species that break the rules **Cherry, plum, damson and other Prunus.** Never prune these in winter. Silver leaf disease, caused by _Chondrostereum purpureum_, infects through wounds during the cool damp months and can kill a mature cherry outright. Prune between June and August when the tree is growing strongly and the spore load is low. **Birch, maple, walnut, hornbeam and vine.** These bleed prodigiously if cut as sap rises in late winter and early spring. The bleeding rarely kills a healthy tree but it is unsightly, attracts insects and looks alarming. Prune in mid-winter before the sap moves, or in mid to late summer. **Oak.** Avoid pruning between April and July where oak processionary moth is present — large parts of west and south-west London are within the affected zone — and be alert to the acute oak decline risk profile. Winter work is strongly preferred. **Ash.** Ash dieback has changed how these trees must be handled. Infected ash becomes brittle and unpredictable, and climbing it can be unsafe. Assess condition before deciding on method, and expect MEWP or crane work on declining specimens. **Magnolia and eucalyptus.** Both respond best to pruning in mid-summer rather than winter, magnolia because winter cuts are slow to seal and eucalyptus because of its vigorous, brittle regrowth. ## When timing stops mattering Safety overrides season. A hanging limb over a footpath, a split fork above a conservatory, a storm-damaged crown or a tree leaning after root plate movement all need dealing with the day they are found, whatever the month. The theoretical increase in decay risk from a summer cut is trivial compared with the actual risk of a limb landing on someone. Dead wood can be removed at any time of year, and doing so is exempt from TPO consent requirements. Removing deadwood in summer is often easier because the dead sections stand out against the live canopy. Where a tree is being removed entirely, season is largely irrelevant except for the nesting-bird check and any ground-condition considerations. That said, if a fell can wait, winter is cheaper and kinder to your lawn. ## Hedges: a different calendar again Formal hedges — box, yew, privet, beech and hornbeam — are typically given one or two light trims a year, the main one in late summer once the season’s growth has hardened. Yew tolerates a second cut and responds well to hard renovation in early spring. Leyland cypress and other conifers are the exception with teeth: they will not regenerate from old brown wood. Cut back beyond the green growth and that section stays bare permanently. Heavy reductions on Leylandii must be planned to leave a live green shell, and are best done between late spring and early autumn while the plant can still put on cover. Deciduous hedges take heavy renovation best in winter. Whatever the species, the March-to-August nesting restriction applies with full force to hedges, which are prime nesting habitat — a check immediately before cutting is a legal requirement, not a courtesy. ## How much can be removed at once British Standard BS3998:2010 is the reference document, and the underlying principle is restraint. As a working rule, no more than about 20–30% of the live crown should be removed in a single operation on a mature tree, and less on a stressed or veteran specimen. Removing more strips the tree of the leaf area it needs to feed itself, and the typical response is a mass of weakly attached epicormic shoots that create a worse problem within three years. This is why “topping” — cutting the main stems back to stubs — is bad practice on virtually every tree. It produces decay at every cut, dense unstable regrowth, and a tree that needs cutting again on a permanent cycle at your expense. A properly specified crown reduction takes the tips back to suitable growth points, keeps the natural outline, and buys several years before the next visit. If a quote describes the work only as “cut back” with a percentage or no specification at all, ask what will actually be cut and to which standard. ## How to decide when to prune your tree A five-step check to work out the right season for pruning or reducing a tree in the UK. 1. 1 ### Identify the species Confirm what the tree is, because the species sets the window.
