Grinding vs Removal Explained Reviewed by Harry Carpenter, founder of Carpenters Tree Care Ltd · Last updated 26 August 2026 ## The Short Answer Stump grinding uses a machine to chip the stump and main roots to between 150mm and 400mm below ground level, and it is the right choice for the large majority of domestic jobs because it is quick, cheap and causes almost no disruption to the surrounding garden. Full stump removal by excavation is only necessary where you are building a foundation, laying a driveway, or planting a new tree in exactly the same spot — and it costs several times as much because it needs machinery and leaves a large hole to backfill. ## Option one: stump grinding A stump grinder is a machine with a rotating cutting wheel studded with tungsten carbide teeth. It sweeps across the stump, reducing it and the visible surface roots to chip. Machines range from narrow-access units that pass through a 750mm gateway to tracked machines for large stumps in open ground, which is why access strongly influences the price. Standard grinding takes the stump to roughly 150–300mm below the surrounding ground level, which is sufficient for turf, planting beds and general garden use. Deeper grinding to around 400mm is available where you intend to lay a patio or turf over the area and want no risk of settlement or fungal fruiting bodies appearing later. The work is fast — most single domestic stumps take between thirty minutes and two hours — and remarkably tidy. The resulting chip and soil mix is either backfilled into the hole, which is the normal choice, or removed and replaced with topsoil where the area is being planted or turfed straight away. The limitation is that grinding does not remove the lateral root system beyond the immediate area of the stump. Those roots stay in the ground and decay naturally over several years, which is entirely fine unless you are excavating for a foundation. - **Typical cost:** £100–£400 per stump depending on diameter and access - **Time:** 30 minutes to 2 hours for most domestic stumps - **Disruption:** minimal — no excavation, lawn largely intact - **Result:** stump gone to 150–400mm below grade; lateral roots remain and decay naturally - **Best for:** lawns, borders, general tidying, patios and most replanting ## Option two: full stump removal by excavation Full removal means digging the stump and its main root system out of the ground, usually with a mini-digger and often with a winch. It is genuinely disruptive: you end up with a hole considerably wider than the stump itself, a substantial volume of soil and root to dispose of, and the need to import and compact backfill. There are situations where nothing else will do. Building foundations, a garage base, a retaining wall or a driveway sub-base over the position of an old stump requires the wood gone, because decaying timber under a structure causes settlement. Service runs — drainage, ducting, a new water main — through the root zone need the same treatment. So does planting a new tree in the identical position, where residual decaying wood and honey fungus risk would compromise the new specimen. The cost typically runs three to five times the grinding price for the same stump, driven by plant hire, access for the machine, waste volume and reinstatement. Machine access is the deciding factor: a rear garden reachable only through the house effectively rules the method out. ## Option three: chemical stump treatment Chemical treatment does not remove a stump. It kills the remaining living tissue so the stump cannot regrow, and lets natural decay do the rest over a period of years. Application is normally by a professional-use herbicide painted onto the fresh cut surface within minutes of felling, when the tree is still drawing material downward into the roots. The value of this is specific: it prevents regrowth on species that sucker aggressively. Poplar, willow, false acacia, cherry, lime, sycamore and ailanthus will all throw up shoots from a cut stump and its root system, sometimes across an entire lawn, and once that starts it is a persistent nuisance to control. The obvious drawback is that the stump physically remains for years. Treatment is also inappropriate close to a pond or watercourse, and the product and method must comply with the label and current UK approvals — which is a reason to have it done professionally rather than with something bought from a garden centre. ## Option four: leaving the stump in place Doing nothing is a legitimate choice and sometimes the best one. A decaying stump is genuinely valuable habitat, supporting fungi, beetles, and the invertebrates that feed birds. Left in an out-of-the-way corner it costs nothing and helps the garden. Stumps can also be used deliberately. Cut to a comfortable height and levelled, they make a garden seat or a plinth for a pot. Hollowed slightly and filled with compost they work as a planter. Some clients ask for the stump to be sculpted rather than removed. There are three reasons not to leave one. It is a trip hazard in any area people walk across, particularly once grass grows over it; it is the main route by which honey fungus establishes and spreads to other plants in the garden; and it will sucker on the species listed above. In a lawn or near a patio, grinding is almost always the better decision. ## Choosing between them The question that settles it is what the ground has to do afterwards. If the answer is lawn, borders, gravel, or general garden, grind it. If the answer is foundations, a driveway sub-base, service trenches or a new tree in the same hole, excavate it. If the answer is nothing much and the species suckers, treat it. If it is out of the way and harmless, leave it. The second consideration is timing. Grinding at the same visit as the felling is meaningfully cheaper than bringing the machine back later, because mobilisation is a fixed cost. If there is any chance you will want the stump gone, say so at the quote stage. Access is the third. Measure your narrowest gateway before you ask for a price — anything under about 750mm rules out most grinders and pushes the job toward hand digging, which changes the cost picture entirely. ## After the stump is gone The chip and soil mix left by grinding is high in carbon and low in available nitrogen, so it is poor growing medium in the short term. For turf or planting, the reliable approach is to remove the top 200–300mm of grindings and backfill with quality topsoil rather than trying to seed straight into the chip. Expect settlement. The material is loose and will drop over the first few months, especially after heavy rain, so leave the backfill slightly proud of the surrounding level and top it up once before laying turf. Do not lay a patio or a path directly over fresh grindings without properly compacted sub-base. If you are replanting, choose a spot at least a metre from the old stump position where you can, and pick a different species to reduce the risk from any species-specific pathogens in the ground.
