Dorking and the wider Mole Valley sit at the heart of the Surrey Hills, around 35 to 45 minutes from our Sutton base. This is genuine hill country — steep chalk escarpment, wooded greensand ridge and the Mole flood plain running between them — and the tree work reflects that terrain.

Box Hill dominates the landscape east of Dorking. The National Trust escarpment carries some of the finest mature beech and native yew woodland in southern England, and the private gardens that back onto it routinely contain parkland-quality specimens needing careful, conservation-minded management.

Leatherhead, Fetcham and the Bookhams to the north are more suburban in character but still heavily treed, with large post-war plots, mature limes and horse chestnut along the older avenues and substantial oak retained from the original field boundaries.

Access is the defining challenge across the district. Steep drives, narrow lanes, riverside gardens with no vehicle access and hillside plots with 20-metre level changes are all normal here. We plan rigging, lowering and extraction routes at survey stage rather than discovering problems on the day.

Mole Valley District covers around 100 square miles of central Surrey and is one of the most heavily wooded districts in southern England, with tree cover estimated well above the county average. Much of that canopy sits within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which stretches across Box Hill, Ranmore Common, Leith Hill and the greensand ridge south of Dorking.

The geology changes sharply over short distances. The North Downs chalk escarpment runs east–west through Box Hill and Ranmore; the Mole Gap cuts through it at Mickleham and Westhumble; south of Dorking the greensand ridge rises again toward Leith Hill, the highest point in south-east England. Each band supports a distinct species mix and its own set of management issues.

Box Hill is a National Trust property and one of the most visited landscapes in the region. Its beech hangers and ancient yew woodland are of national ecological significance, and tree work in adjoining private ownership needs to be specified with that context firmly in mind.

Mole Valley District Council operates an active TPO regime with an online register. Conservation areas include Dorking town centre, Leatherhead old town, Brockham Green, Betchworth, Mickleham and several of the surrounding villages, each carrying six weeks' notification for significant tree work.

Common species across the district include beech and yew on the chalk, English and sessile oak throughout, Scots pine and sweet chestnut on the greensand, ash (now heavily compromised by dieback), hornbeam and hazel in the woodland understorey, and willow, alder and poplar along the Mole flood plain.

The River Mole runs the length of the district and floods regularly through Brockham, Betchworth, Leatherhead and Dorking's low-lying fringes. Riverside tree management — bank stability, leaning stems, undermined root plates and post-flood clearance — is a distinct and recurring part of our local workload.

Denbies Wine Estate, Norbury Park, Polesden Lacey and Leith Hill Place bring substantial heritage and estate tree stock into the district, and the surrounding private gardens often contain specimens of the same vintage and scale. Veteran tree management, retrenchment pruning and habitat retention all feature in this kind of work.
