Large Horse Chestnut Removal — South East London
Large horse chestnut removal in South East London. Extremely tight space due to garages and sheds either side, with neighbouring properties in close proximity. We used a 19m tracked MEWP (mobile elevated work platform) to ensure safe, efficient removal without the risk of damage to surrounding structures.
This job is a textbook example of why the right access equipment matters. Climbing and rigging from inside a tree this size, in a space this restricted, would have multiplied both the time on site and the risk to the garages below. The MEWP gave our team a stable working platform to dismantle the canopy and stem in controlled sections — a method we use regularly for complex tree felling across London.
1. Site survey — mature horse chestnut in tight access between garages, sheds and neighbouring properties.
2. 19m CMC tracked MEWP set up on outriggers — chosen to safely reach the canopy without rigging from inside the tree.
3. Initial crown reduction — taking the upper canopy down in manageable sections to reduce weight.
4. Selective branch removal — hand-cutting smaller limbs to keep debris away from the garages and shed roofs below.
5. Sectional dismantle of the main stem — controlled chainsaw cuts from the basket, two-man team for safety.
6. Lowering large stem rounds by hand from the basket — no rigging lines needed thanks to MEWP positioning.
7. Final stump and clean site — tree fully removed with zero damage to the garages, sheds or fencing.
