    Everything You Need to Know
    About Hedge Trimming

    What It Is

Hedge trimming is the regular cutting of hedges to maintain their shape, density and health. We trim all hedge types — from formal box and yew to large boundary Leylandii and laurel. We use professional hedge trimmers for speed and consistency, with hand shears for precision finishing on formal hedges.

    Who It's For

Homeowners maintaining garden hedges and boundary screening. Landlords keeping rental properties presentable. Commercial property managers needing reliable, scheduled hedge maintenance. Estate managers with large boundary hedges. Anyone whose hedges have become untidy but aren't drastically overgrown.

    When You Need It

Most formal hedges benefit from 2–3 trims per year — spring, midsummer and early autumn. Informal hedges typically need one good annual trim. Fast-growing species like Leylandii and privet may need trimming every 6–8 weeks during the growing season. We'll recommend the right schedule for your hedge type.

    Why Professional Help Matters

Irregular or infrequent trimming causes hedges to become leggy, patchy and thin at the base. Once a hedge loses its lower density, it's extremely difficult to recover without hard cutting. Regular professional trimming maintains the dense, full shape that provides effective screening, security and kerb appeal.

What Neglected Hedges Actually Cost You

    !

An untrimmed hedge grows outward as well as upward, encroaching on paths, driveways and neighbouring properties. This triggers complaints, boundary disputes and in some cases legal action.

    !

Hedges that aren't trimmed regularly become hollow and thin at the base. Once the lower growth is lost, the hedge no longer provides effective privacy screening — and recovering base density takes years.

    !

Overgrown hedges harbour pests including rats, which nest in dense, unmanaged growth near buildings. Regular trimming keeps hedges too open and disturbed for pest habitation.

    !

Unkempt hedges signal a neglected property. Estate agents consistently identify hedge condition as a top factor in kerb appeal and first impressions during property viewings.

    !

Nesting birds are legally protected during the nesting season (March–August). If you wait too long, you may be unable to trim at all during the optimal growing season, allowing further overgrowth.

    How We Deliver
    Hedge Trimming

    1

    Assessment & Quote

We assess hedge type, height, length and access. You receive a written, fixed-price quote. No surprises.

    2

    Professional Trimming

We trim to your agreed shape and height using professional long-reach hedge trimmers. Formal hedges receive hand-shear finishing for crisp lines.

    3

    Nesting Checks

Before cutting during bird nesting season (March–August), we check for active nests. If found, we leave that section and return after fledging.

    4

    Complete Clean-Up

All cuttings and debris are cleared from lawns, paths and borders. We leave your property cleaner than we found it.

    5

    Maintenance Schedule

We recommend trimming frequency based on your hedge species and advise on the best times for each cut.

    Nesting Season Compliant

We check for nesting birds before every trim during the protected season, ensuring full legal compliance.

    Domestic & Commercial

Single garden hedges to large commercial boundary runs — same quality, same professionalism, same clean-up.

Hedge Types, Equipment and Trimming Methods

Formal hedges — box (Buxus), yew (Taxus), privet (Ligustrum), beech (Fagus) and hornbeam (Carpinus) — require precise, clean cuts to maintain their geometric shapes. We use reciprocating blade hedge trimmers for straight runs and hand shears for detailing corners, tops and formal shapes.

Boundary hedges — Leylandii (Cupressocyparis), laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), photinia and griselinia — are trimmed for containment and density. We use long-reach powered trimmers and platforms for hedges over 2m, achieving clean, even cuts along the full height.

We shape hedges with a slight taper — wider at the base than the top. This 'A-frame' profile ensures the lower growth receives sunlight and remains dense. Vertical or top-heavy profiles cause base die-back over time.

For very tall hedges (over 3m), we use mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) or scaffold towers to ensure safe working at height and consistent cut quality along the full face.

Timing varies by species. Evergreen hedges (yew, box, holly) are typically trimmed once or twice in late summer. Deciduous hedges (beech, hornbeam) are trimmed in late June and September. Fast-growers (privet, Leylandii) need trimming every 6–8 weeks during growing season.

All cuttings are collected using ground sheets and either removed from site or composted on-site if the client prefers. Large hedge runs can produce significant volumes of material — we have the vehicle capacity to handle even the biggest jobs in a single visit.
