# Controlled Regrowth Management for Urban and Garden Trees

Pollarding cuts branches back to the main trunk or established framework, encouraging dense new growth at a controlled height. It keeps trees at a manageable size indefinitely — the standard solution for urban trees and restricted spaces across London.

## Everything You Need to Know
About Pollarding

### What It Is

Pollarding is a cyclical pruning technique where all branches are cut back to the main trunk or a permanent framework of primary branches (known as a pollard head). New shoots grow from these points each season, creating a dense head of young growth that is managed on a 1–3 year cycle. It's a centuries-old technique still widely used across London.

### Who It's For

Homeowners with trees that repeatedly outgrow their space. Street tree managers and local authorities maintaining urban canopies. Property managers needing to keep trees below building height or clear of power lines. Anyone with species like lime, willow or plane that grow vigorously and need regular size control.

### When You Need It

When a tree repeatedly outgrows its space and regular crown reduction isn't holding the size. When a tree is too large but too valuable or protected to remove. When you need to maintain a tree at a fixed height indefinitely. When managing avenue or street trees for uniform appearance.

### Why Professional Help Matters

Without cyclical pollarding, previously pollarded trees develop heavy, unstable branches from the pollard heads. These branches are structurally weaker than natural growth and increasingly prone to failure as they extend. Maintaining the pollard cycle is essential once the technique has been started — neglecting it creates a more dangerous tree, not a safer one.

## What Happens When Pollarding Is Neglected

!

Neglected pollards develop long, heavy branches from the pollard heads. These attachments are structurally weak — they're prone to snapping and splitting, especially in storms or under snow load.

!

Overgrown pollard regrowth creates dense shade and catches wind like a sail, placing enormous stress on the trunk. Trees that were safe when maintained become hazardous when neglected.

!

Once a tree has been pollarded, the technique must be maintained on cycle. Allowing regrowth to mature and then pollarding again is more stressful for the tree and more expensive for you.

!

Local authorities can issue enforcement notices requiring you to maintain previously pollarded trees. Failure to act can result in fines and the council carrying out work at your expense.

!

Insurance claims for damage caused by failed branches from neglected pollards are routinely declined — the insurer argues foreseeable risk that wasn't managed.

## How We Deliver
Pollarding

1

### Species Assessment

We confirm the tree species is suitable for pollarding. Not all trees tolerate this technique — we'll advise honestly if an alternative approach is better.

2

### Framework Establishment

For first-time pollards, we establish the pollard framework — selecting the right height and branch structure for long-term management.

3

### Cyclical Pollarding

Branches are cut back cleanly to the established pollard heads. We use sharp, clean tools to minimise wound size and promote rapid healing.

4

### Complete Clean-Up

All removed material is cleared from site. We chip branches on-site where access allows.

5

### Maintenance Schedule

We set the pollard cycle (typically 1–3 years depending on species) and can arrange a regular contract for ongoing management.

## Why Clients Choose Us
for Pollarding

### Permanent Size Control

Pollarding keeps trees at a fixed, manageable height indefinitely. No more worrying about your tree outgrowing its space every few years.

### Extended Tree Lifespan

Properly managed pollards can live for centuries. The technique prolongs the tree's life by preventing structural overload.

### Reduced Liability

Regular pollarding eliminates the risk of heavy branch failure, protecting people, property and your legal position.

### Urban Space Compatible

Pollarding is the standard approach for managing trees in confined urban spaces, near buildings, and under power lines.

### Cost-Effective Long-Term

Regular cyclical pollarding is cheaper per visit than ad-hoc crown reductions, especially on a maintenance contract.

### Clean, Uniform Appearance

Pollarded trees have a distinctive, neat architectural form that suits formal gardens, avenues and urban streetscapes.

## Pollarding Species, Timing and Long-Term Management

Pollarding is only suitable for certain species. Lime (Tilia), willow (Salix), London plane (Platanus), certain oaks, and horse chestnut respond well. Species like beech, birch and most conifers do not tolerate pollarding and should never be subjected to it. We assess every tree before recommending this technique.

The pollard cycle depends on species growth rate. Willows may need annual pollarding. Limes and planes typically work on a 2–3 year cycle. We set the right frequency for your tree and can build it into a regular maintenance contract.

First-time pollarding (creating a new pollard) is a significant operation. It's best done during the dormant season (November–March) and requires careful selection of the pollard height and framework branches. Once established, the framework is permanent.

For previously pollarded trees that have been neglected, we carry out restoration pollarding. This involves carefully removing overgrown regrowth and re-establishing the pollard heads. Heavily neglected trees may need phased restoration over two seasons to reduce stress.

Pollarding is distinct from topping. While both reduce a tree's height, pollarding is a planned, cyclical technique carried out at specific points with aftercare. Topping is indiscriminate cutting that damages trees. We never top trees.

Commercial pollarding contracts for estates, councils and housing associations benefit from scheduled annual visits and fixed pricing. We manage portfolios of 50+ trees for several local clients, ensuring every tree is maintained on cycle.
