    Stump Grinding

Remove Unsightly Stumps and Reclaim Your Usable Garden Space

After a tree has been felled, the stump doesn't have to stay. Stump grinding reduces stumps to below ground level — faster, cleaner and more cost-effective than full excavation. Reclaim the space for turf, planting or construction.

    Everything You Need to Know
    About Stump Grinding

    What It Is

Stump grinding uses a specialist machine to mechanically grind a tree stump and its surface roots to 150–300mm below ground level. The machine has a rotating cutting wheel with carbide teeth that chips through the stump in a controlled sweep. The resulting wood chips can be backfilled into the hole or removed from site.

    Who It's For

Homeowners who've had a tree felled and want to reclaim the space. Property developers preparing sites for construction. Gardeners wanting to plant or turf over an old stump location. Anyone tired of mowing around stumps or tripping over roots. Stump grinding is often added to tree felling as a same-day service.

    When You Need It

After tree felling — ideally on the same day to avoid a second visit. When old stumps are preventing landscaping or construction. When stumps are creating trip hazards on paths or lawns. When stump regrowth (suckers) keeps sprouting and creating maintenance problems. When stumps are attracting fungi, insects or pests.

    Why Professional Help Matters

Leaving a stump in the ground creates ongoing problems. Stumps attract honey fungus — one of the most destructive garden pathogens — which can spread to and kill healthy trees, shrubs and hedges. Root systems from dead stumps continue to decay, creating underground voids that cause subsidence in lawns and paths. And stumps produce persistent regrowth suckers that require constant cutting. Professional grinding eliminates all these issues in under an hour.

Why Leaving a Stump Costs More Than Removing It

    !

Dead stumps are the primary entry point for honey fungus (Armillaria) into gardens. Once established, honey fungus spreads through the soil via rhizomorphs (bootlaces) and kills trees, hedges, shrubs and even some perennials. Treatment is extremely expensive and often unsuccessful.

    !

Decaying root systems create underground voids that cause lawns, paths and patios to sink and crack. Subsidence repairs are significantly more expensive than stump grinding.

    !

Stumps produce persistent regrowth suckers — sometimes for years. Each time you cut them, they grow back. Grinding below ground level eliminates the growth points permanently.

    !

Stumps are trip hazards, especially when partially hidden by grass. You carry legal liability if someone is injured by a stump on your property.

    !

Stumps harbour wood-boring beetles, termites and other pests that can spread to buildings, fences and other timber structures. Removing the stump removes the habitat.

    How We Deliver
    Stump Grinding

    1

    Assessment & Access

We assess the stump size, species, location and access route. Narrow-access grinders fit through standard 70cm garden gates.

    2

    Utility Checks

We confirm there are no buried services (gas, water, electric, drainage) within the grinding zone. If uncertain, we use CAT scanners to check.

    3

    Grinding

The stump grinder systematically reduces the stump and visible surface roots to 150–300mm below ground level.

    4

    Backfill

The hole is backfilled with the wood chip grindings (which decompose naturally) or with imported topsoil if you're planning to turf or plant immediately.

    5

    Clean Site

Excess grindings are removed if not needed. The area is raked level and left ready for its next use.

    Why Clients Choose Us
    for Stump Grinding

    Reclaimed Garden Space

Remove the stump and you can turf, plant, build or landscape over the area immediately. No more working around it.

    Honey Fungus Prevention

Grinding removes the dead wood that attracts Armillaria. It's the single most effective prevention measure for honey fungus in residential gardens.

    No Heavy Excavation

Unlike full stump extraction, grinding doesn't require digging equipment. No damage to surrounding lawns, paths or structures.

    Narrow Access Capability

Our pedestrian stump grinders fit through standard garden gates (70cm+) and can access rear gardens, courtyards and confined spaces.

    Fast Completion

Most stumps are ground in under an hour. If combined with tree felling, we grind the same day — one visit, one clean-up.

    Below-Ground Removal

Grinding to 150–300mm below surface means you can lay turf, plant or even install light structures over the area without obstruction.

Stump Grinding Equipment, Depth and Site Considerations

We operate several stump grinder sizes to match the job. Pedestrian grinders (narrow-access machines under 70cm wide) handle most residential stumps and access through standard garden gates. Tracked grinders are used for larger stumps or multiple stumps where ground conditions are soft. Self-propelled highway grinders handle large commercial stumps and roadside work.

Standard grinding depth is 150–300mm below ground level — sufficient for turf, planting and most garden landscaping. If you're planning to build, lay foundations or install fence posts in the stump location, we can grind deeper (up to 600mm) at additional cost. Advise us of your plans at the quote stage.

Surface root grinding extends the grinding zone beyond the stump itself, removing visible roots that radiate outward. This is important if roots are lifting paving, cracking paths or interfering with lawn mowing. We price root grinding separately based on the extent.

The wood chip grindings produced are a mix of wood and soil. They make excellent garden mulch when spread around shrubs and trees, or can be composted. If you prefer not to keep them, we remove all grindings from site.

Some species produce harder stumps than others. Oak, yew and hornbeam take longer to grind than softer species like willow, poplar and pine. We account for species hardness in our pricing.

For sites with multiple stumps (development clearances, garden renovations), we offer discounted rates. Grinding 5 or more stumps in a single visit is significantly cheaper per stump than individual visits.
