    Everything You Need to Know
    About Wood Chipping

    What It Is

Wood chipping is the on-site or off-site shredding of brash, branches and small-diameter timber into uniform woodchip. We operate professional tracked and towable chippers up to 9-inch capacity, capable of chipping anything that comes off a domestic or light commercial tree job.

    Who It's For

Anyone with a brash pile larger than a bonfire. Smallholders, equestrian properties and allotment groups looking for free mulch. Gardeners wanting chip for paths, mulched beds or play surfacing. Landscapers needing bulk chip delivery on a project. Estate managers tidying up after winter storms.

    When You Need It

Wood chip can be requested any time of year. Free delivery rounds run weekly across our local patch (Sutton, Croydon, Wimbledon, Kingston, Epsom, Bromley, Reigate, Caterham). On-site chipping of your own brash pile is booked as a stand-alone half-day or full-day visit.

    Why Professional Help Matters

Burning brash is increasingly restricted by local bylaws and DEFRA air-quality guidance. Sending green waste to landfill is environmentally indefensible and expensive. Chipping turns waste into a useful, recyclable product — used as mulch, path surface, animal bedding or composting feedstock.

What to Do With a Pile of Brash After Tree Work

    !

Bonfires in built-up London and Surrey areas regularly trigger statutory nuisance complaints. Smoke drift onto a neighbour's property can result in council abatement notices.

    !

Skip hire for green waste is expensive — typically £350+ for a 6-yard skip, plus the cost of loading. Most green waste is too bulky to fit efficiently and you end up paying for air.

    !

DIY chipping with hire equipment is risky. Professional chippers cause more A&E injuries per hour of use than chainsaws. Drawn-in clothing accidents are catastrophic.

    !

Garden waste collection rounds (where they exist) cap container size and won't take branches over a few centimetres thick. Bulky brash piles aren't collected.

    !

Letting brash sit creates fire risk in summer, harbours rats and slugs, and looks awful. The longer it sits, the harder it becomes to handle.

Uses for Wood Chip — and How to Apply It

Garden mulch is the most common use. A 75–100mm layer of fresh wood chip over flower beds and around shrubs suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture and gradually breaks down to feed the soil. Keep the chip clear of stems and trunks (a 5–10cm gap) to avoid bark rot.

Pathway surfacing is the second-most common use. Wood chip makes a soft, free-draining, sustainable path surface — ideal for woodland walks, allotment paths and informal garden routes. Top up annually as the chip composts down.

Children's play areas and natural climbing zones use a deeper chip layer (200mm+) as impact-attenuating surfacing. Standards exist for accredited play surfacing — domestic garden installations don't need to meet these but a deep, well-maintained chip layer is significantly safer than bare ground.

Equestrian use: wood chip can be used for menage surfacing, gateway hardstanding and stable bedding (for the right horse — some animals are sensitive to certain species). Free delivery makes this an affordable bulk material for smallholders.

Composting: fresh chip is high in carbon and benefits from being mixed with nitrogen-rich material (grass clippings, manure, kitchen waste) to compost down within 12–18 months into a useful soil conditioner. Stand-alone chip piles take 2–3 years to break down.

Note on species: most wood chip from broadleaved trees is suitable for general garden use. We avoid delivering chip from yew (toxic to livestock) or laurel (releases cyanide as it breaks down) for animal-grazing applications. Always tell us if the chip is destined for animal use.

If you'd like the chip from your own tree job kept on site, just say so when you book — we'll tip it where you want and rake it level. There's no extra charge for this on jobs we are already carrying out.

For larger commercial sites we can supply walking-floor lorry loads (around 60–80 cubic metres) of chip. Useful for landscape contractors, estate managers and large biomass projects.
