Crown Reductions
Restore Light and Balance to Overgrown Trees Without Removing Them
Crown reduction is the most effective solution when a tree has outgrown its space. We reduce the overall height and spread while preserving the tree's health, structure and natural form — restoring light to your property and reducing storm risk.

Everything You Need to Know
About Crown Reductions
What It Is
Crown reduction reduces the overall height and spread of a tree's canopy by shortening branches back to suitable growth points. Unlike topping (which damages trees), proper crown reduction maintains the tree's natural shape and structural integrity. All cuts are made to British Standard BS 3998 — the industry standard for tree work.
Who It's For
Homeowners whose trees block light to gardens, kitchens or neighbouring properties. Property managers maintaining trees near buildings, roads or power lines. Anyone who wants to keep a tree but needs it smaller, safer and better shaped.
When You Need It
When a tree is blocking natural light to your home or garden. When branches are encroaching on neighbouring properties. When heavy limbs create a risk of failure in high winds. When a tree has grown out of proportion with its surroundings. After storm damage that has left the crown unbalanced.
Why Professional Help Matters
Incorrect pruning — especially topping — causes long-term damage. It triggers weak, fast-growing regrowth (epicormic shoots) that is more prone to failure than the original branches. Poorly executed cuts create entry points for disease and decay. Professional crown reduction by qualified arborists preserves the tree's health while achieving the size reduction you need.
The Real Cost of Ignoring an Overgrown Crown
An overgrown tree reduces natural light to your property, creating dark rooms and damp conditions that encourage mould growth. Homes with significant shading can lose 10–15% of their market value.
Heavy, extended branches carry enormous weight. In storms, these limbs snap and fall — damaging roofs, vehicles, fences and power lines. You are legally liable for damage caused by trees on your property.
Overgrown canopies block sunlight to lawns and planting areas, killing grass and garden plants. Dense shade also creates permanently damp ground that attracts pests.
Neighbours have legal rights to cut back branches that overhang their boundary. If they do it badly, it can permanently disfigure your tree. Professional reduction avoids disputes entirely.
Trees growing into power lines or close to buildings trigger enforcement notices from local authorities. Ignoring these results in fines and forced removal at your expense.
How We Deliver
Crown Reductions
Free On-Site Assessment
We inspect the tree's health, structure and surroundings. We measure current dimensions and agree target reduction (typically 20–30% of crown volume).
Planning & Permissions
We check for TPOs and conservation area restrictions. If consent is required, we prepare and submit the application.
Crown Reduction
Our climbing arborists reduce branches back to suitable growth points, maintaining the tree's natural silhouette. All cuts follow BS 3998 pruning standards.
Complete Site Clearance
All branches, leaves and debris are removed. We chip material on-site where possible and leave your garden clean.
Aftercare Guidance
We advise on the tree's expected regrowth rate and recommend a maintenance schedule — typically every 2–3 years for most species.
Why Clients Choose Us
for Crown Reductions
Immediate Light Restoration
A properly reduced crown lets significantly more natural light reach your home, garden and neighbouring properties within hours of completion.
Reduced Storm Risk
Removing excess weight and wind load from the canopy dramatically reduces the chance of branch failure in storms.
Tree Health Preserved
Unlike topping, professional crown reduction maintains the tree's vascular system and natural form, ensuring continued healthy growth.
Property Value Protection
Well-maintained trees add value. Overgrown, poorly managed trees reduce it. Regular crown reduction is an investment in your property.
Neighbour Relations
Proactively managing your tree's spread prevents boundary disputes and maintains good relationships with neighbouring properties.
BS 3998 Standard Work
Every cut we make follows British Standard BS 3998, giving you confidence the work is done correctly and won't cause long-term damage.
Crown Reduction Techniques and Species Considerations
Crown reduction differs from crown topping. Topping involves cutting branches to arbitrary lengths, leaving stubs that decay and produce weak regrowth. Reduction cuts branches back to a lateral branch or growth point that is at least one-third the diameter of the removed branch. This ensures the tree can compartmentalise the wound and continue healthy growth.
The amount a crown can be safely reduced depends on the species, age and health of the tree. Most deciduous trees tolerate 20–30% reduction well. Some species, including beech and birch, are more sensitive and require conservative reductions of 15–20%. We assess each tree individually and advise on what's achievable.
Timing matters. Most crown reductions are best performed during the dormant season (November to February) when the tree is not actively growing. However, certain species can be pruned year-round. Limes, for example, respond well to summer pruning. We schedule your work for the optimal time based on species.
For large canopy trees — oak, beech, chestnut, plane — crown reduction is typically a two-climber operation. One arborist works the crown while the second manages rigging and lowering in areas where branches cannot be allowed to free-fall.
We use silky hand saws for branches under 50mm diameter and professional chainsaw equipment for larger limbs. All cuts are clean, angled to promote callus formation, and positioned to avoid flush cuts or stubs.
Residential crown reductions in London typically take one day for a single tree. Larger specimens or multi-tree contracts may require 2–3 days. We confirm timescales and access requirements in your written quote.
