Everything You Need to Know
About Tree Felling
What It Is
Tree felling is the complete removal of a tree from its base. We use sectional dismantling for trees near buildings, boundaries or services, and straight felling where space allows. Every removal is planned with precision — from the initial cut angle to the fall zone and rigging system.
Who It's For
Homeowners dealing with dead, diseased or dangerous trees. Property developers clearing sites for construction. Estate managers maintaining land. Local authorities managing public safety. If a tree is causing structural damage, blocking light, or posing a liability risk, this service is for you.
When You Need It
When a tree is dead, dying, or structurally compromised. When roots are damaging foundations, drains or boundary walls. When a tree is covered by an insurance claim after storm damage. When planning permission requires removal before development. When a tree has outgrown its location and cannot be managed by pruning alone.
Why Professional Help Matters
Felling a tree without the right equipment, training and insurance is dangerous. Incorrect cuts cause uncontrolled falls. DIY removal risks damage to property, injury, and legal liability. Professional arborists assess structural load, use calibrated rigging systems, and carry £10M public liability insurance. The cost of professional removal is a fraction of the cost of the damage an uncontrolled fell can cause.
What Happens When You Delay Tree Removal
Dead trees shed heavy limbs without warning — a falling branch can damage roofs, vehicles, fences and injure people. You carry personal liability for any damage caused by a tree on your property.
Diseased trees spread pathogens to healthy trees nearby. Honey fungus, ash dieback and phytophthora can devastate an entire garden or woodland if the infected tree isn't removed promptly.
Root systems from compromised trees continue growing, cracking foundations, lifting driveways and blocking drains. Structural repairs caused by root damage regularly cost £5,000–£20,000+.
Many homeowners assume a tree is safe because it still has leaves. Internal decay, bracket fungi and root plate failure are invisible from ground level without professional assessment.
Insurance claims for storm damage are routinely rejected when the insurer can demonstrate the tree was in a known state of decline and no action was taken.
How We Deliver
Tree Felling
Free Site Assessment
We inspect the tree, assess access, identify risks and check for TPOs or conservation area restrictions. You receive a written quote within 24 hours.
Planning & Permissions
If the tree is protected, we handle all council applications. We confirm the method — sectional dismantling or straight fell — and agree the schedule.
Controlled Removal
Our climbing arborists rig and lower each section using calibrated lowering systems. Ground crew manage the drop zone and process timber in real time.
Site Clearance
All timber, brash and debris removed from site. We chip branches on-site where access allows, reducing vehicle movements and disruption.
Final Inspection
We walk the site with you, confirm the stump is cut to ground level (or below if stump grinding is included), and leave the area clean and ready for use.

Tree Felling Methods, Equipment and Considerations
Straight felling is used where there is sufficient clear space for the tree to fall safely. The arborist cuts a directional notch (typically a Humboldt or conventional notch) on the fall side, then makes a back cut to release the hinge wood. This method is fast, cost-effective and ideal for open spaces, paddocks and development sites.
Sectional dismantling is required when a tree stands close to buildings, boundaries, overhead cables or other structures. The climber ascends the tree using ropes and harnesses, then removes the crown in manageable sections. Each piece is rigged to a lowering point and controlled to the ground by the ground crew. This method eliminates drop-zone risk and is the standard approach for residential garden removals in London.
Crane-assisted removal is used for very large trees, trees in confined spaces with no climbing access, or emergency situations where speed is critical. We partner with CPCS-certified crane operators and plan every lift with engineered load calculations.
Stump treatment after felling depends on the species and your plans for the area. We can grind stumps to 150–300mm below ground level, apply eco-plug stump killer to prevent regrowth, or leave the stump flush-cut if you prefer. Stump grinding is available as an add-on or included in larger contracts.
For residential properties, we schedule work to minimise disruption — typically completing single-tree removals within one day. Commercial and multi-tree contracts are phased to maintain site access and comply with CDM regulations where applicable.
All waste is recycled. Timber is processed into firewood logs or biomass. Brash is chipped and used as landscape mulch or composted. We operate a zero-to-landfill policy on all green waste.
